Then Moses answered, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’” The Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A staff.” And he said, “Throw it on the ground.” So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent, and Moses ran from it. But the Lord said to Moses, “Put out your hand and catch it by the tail”—so he put out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand— “that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”
What’s in your hand? That was the question God had for Moses. God was about to use Moses to deliver the people of Israel out of bondage in Egypt. However, Moses was concerned that the Israelites would not believe that the Almighty God had sent him for this mission. That is when God asked Moses about the thing in his hand. At the time, Moses was hold the staff he used to shepherd his father-in-law Jethro’s flock. Yet, the Father used this simple tool to empower Moses to accomplish the task he was called to do.
I know a lot of men may feel inadequate or incapable to be a good father. Some may be scared that their past will fail them. Well God has the very same question for all of us men as he did for Moses- what is in your hand? The same God who turned that shepherd’s staff into a serpent is the same God who can use what we have to accomplish great things for His glory. There is nothing that our God cannot do!
Yet, we must trust in Him, and allow Him to take the lead in our lives. God used Moses to deliver His people, and can help us to become the fathers He desires us to be. So give God what is in your hand, and watch what He will do through you.
Thank you Heavenly Father for not throwing away broken vessels like me. Please do a work in me so I can be the father my family needs to grow and strive. In Jesus name. Amen
