What’s in your hand?
Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live.
This passage of Scripture talks about the importance of learning and teaching wisdom. Solomon urges his sons to not forsake the same teaching that his father David had taught him. The ways of God was to be passed down from generation to generation, starting with the father and continuing with the son. It was understood that one of the father’s responsibility was to train his children according to God’s standards. You can say it is part of our job description!
Wise parents not only actively learn, but they also pass on the knowledge to help their children grow and develop. Children are like sponges, and will soak in whatever teaching is coming at them. Don’t allow music, television, social media, and the world to mold your them. Take on the responsibility to mold them yourself. The next generation depends on us to do our God-given job description!
Father, teach me your ways. Show me what I need to do to become a strong and faithful dad. Help me to bring up the children you have given me in the training and instruction of you. In Jesus name, Amen.
